A global search for fresh and exciting digital and technological ideas that address social isolation

WHAT IS IT?

The Social Connections Challenge is an opportunity to shake things up and capitalize on the amazing ways that people have been keeping connected using technology during the COVID-19 global pandemic. We've earmarked AUD $3.54M in funding for digital or technology-focused ideas that maintain or strengthen social connections and tackle isolation. For this challenge, we’re focusing on ideas for men who are at greater risk of social isolation because of where they live, their socio-economic status or cultural background.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

In August 2020, Movember advertised the Social Connections Challenge funding opportunity as broadly as possible to the general community (e.g. researchers, community organisations and social entrepreneurs). Submissions have now closed and we're working to ideate, develop and implement selected ideas across three phases:

Phase 1 (in progress): The first phase involves the shortlisting and cultivation of innovative ideas. A total of 72 ideas from Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK have been selected for Phase 1. These ideas have been announced and will undergo further assessment by an external panel of subject matter experts from each participating country. Each idea has been grouped into one of six thematic areas: apps & artificial intelligence, creative expressions, gaming/gamification & video production, culture & inclusivenesslife events, and mentorship & peer support. To view the shortlist, scroll down on this page.

Phase 2: The second phase will see 7-16 ideas selected for co-development with Movember. These projects, identified to have the broadest application and show the most potential to improve men's mental health, will receive additional investment between $100k-$250k AUD.

Phase 3: Following successful project development, the final phase of the Social Connections Challenge will involve further investment in implementation activities.
